A long garden in Mile End, East London: I was asked to design a new garden for a keen gardener – I did the plan; he did the planting. Beyond the terrace, lawn and main beds, part screened by yew hedging, we turned the footings on an old building into a canal and beyond that, a vegetable garden and pavilion. The clever thing, was to plant a line of pleached hornbeam at a high level across the garden to screen the houses beyond. There was some excitement when the excavator touched the top of an enormous, and hitherto hidden, brick chamber and seemed likely to disappear into it – like a mechanical Persephone.
