A garden in Hampstead, London NW3: in conjunction with extensive works to this large house on a hill, I was asked to design new gardens at front and rear. In reality, the site was too small for the house, wide but relatively short. I resolved this by making an enfilade of hedged ‘rooms’ facing the house, part screened by a long narrow border of gauzy planting, into which we put sculpture – life size bronzes of Orpheus and Eurydice, specially commissioned from Olivia Musgrave, separated by a narrow canal. On the terrace, at a higher level, the centre piece of the pool was a horse’s head by Nic Fiddian Green. James Knox was the art consultant.
